My work is focused on photographic records depicting the youth of my parents and their experiences as children and young adults living in 1950's and 60's  New York.  Since a young age I have been continually drawn to the strangely faded photographs in my mothers dusty old photo albums. Peering at these photos I have long wished I could remember the moments captured within the image for myself, that I had experienced the events and situations, these framed moments, pieces of something bigger.

By adapting the images and splicing them together through collage and use of mixed media I have juxtaposed these fragments of my families past  and altered them into a history of my own.

The image altering process begins by photocopying and applying the enlarged pictures to board thus leaving me with a solid foundation for my painting.  The flat image acts as a guideline and allows me complete freedom to alter things as I see fit.

This form of working leaves more room for experimentation because there is virtually an unlimited supply of source material. Some images are manipulated in ways that seem very graphic but in others they become more abstracted.  Each image creates it’s own unique decision making process.

I often frame my altered image on the board to reinforce the photographic origins of the piece and thus containing the new memory which I have created.
